The brooch is modeled as a stylized whale in profile, the body formed from an oval of textured bark-finish 18-karat yellow gold, the florentine surface giving the form warmth and tactile depth. A round blue sapphire cabochon is set as the eye. The spout issues from the crown of the head as a fan of fine arcing gold wires, each wire terminating in a claw-set round blue sapphire, the spray of stone-tipped wires conveying the dispersing arc of a whale's blow with considerable lightness and naturalistic character. The back carries a simple needle pin and is stamped 18K and signed E. Pearl. The whale in motion is an immensely unique piece, with intricate details that make a whale's natural beauty translate into wearable art. We guarantee authenticity and this piece is estimated to be from the 1950 to 1960s, before he made the transition into fashion jewelry.
Erwin Pearl was a Vienna-born, New York–trained jeweler who founded his company in 1952 as a diamond cutter and fine jewelry designer, winning the Diamond International Award five years running. In 1970 he expanded into fashion jewelry, becoming known for elegant faux-pearl, rhinestone, and plated-metal pieces made at his own Rhode Island factories.
